Tata Motors will unveil a new car on April 6. The new car could be the concept version of the upcoming Nexon Coupe codenamed Blackbird. We believe this because the Tata YouTube channel says “Look at our brand-new electric SUV concept”. Earlier, the Nexon Coupe concept was unveiled at the 2022 Auto Expo. However, the Auto Expo 2023 has been postponed. It seems that Tata Motors itself has decided to showcase the concept.
Nexon Coupe is expected to start production in 2024. Interestingly, Tata Motors will first launch the new car as an EV and follow the ICE-powered versions. The domestic manufacturer expects to sell 25,000 Nexon Coupe EVs in the first year and sales may increase as the Indian market gradually converts to EVs.

Tata Motors has released several teasers for the upcoming event. The teaser definitely doesn’t show anything. However, we do see the front elements. We can see the slim LED day time running lamp, there is a strip that connects the DRLs. There are new alloy wheels that have an electrified design. There is a record roofline that will make the SUV look like a coupe. The concept version may be closer to production-spec because Tata Motors has a good track record of showing their production vehicles very close to concept vehicles.
Tata Blackbird
The Nexon Coupe or Blackbird will be a mid-sized SUV that will go against the likes of the MG Astor, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks. It will measure 4.3 meters in length. Tata Motors will use Nexon’s X1 platform. However, changes will be made in the platform to make the car bigger. Wheel geometry will be changed to increase the wheelbase by 50 mm.
As we can see from the teasers, the design of the Nexon Coupe looks quite different from the currently sold Nexon. The A-pillar and front door will be the same as the current Nexon. The front design will be brand new, the rear doors will be increased in size, the tailgate and roof will be sloping, and the overhangs will be larger.
Powertrain
The Nexon Coupe EV will use Ziptron technology using the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. The battery pack will be larger than the current Nexon EV. It could be a 40 kWh battery pack that will make its debut in the long-range Nexon EV. However, it will handle excess weight and increase power output. The current Nexon EV produces 129 hp and 245 Nm.
The offer will have two internal combustion engines. Both will have a 1.5-liter displacement. The petrol engine is a new unit that will come with turbocharging. The same engine will be used for Harrier and Safari. The engine output is expected to be around 160 bhp. The diesel engine will be the current 1.5-liter unit but Tata Motors will make some changes so that it meets the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 emissions regulations. We hope that Tata Motors is also able to extract more power from the engine.
