Affordable EVs? How 2023 Toyota BZ4X measures price from other electric

Drive impressions and pricing are set for the 2023 Toyota BZ4X, Toyota’s first battery-powered electric car since the RAV4 EV was discontinued in 2014. Much has changed since then, and Toyota remains the hybrid leader, now catching up with rivals: electric crossovers including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Tesla Model Y, Nissan Leaf and Chevy. Not to mention the small electrics sold year after year like the Bolt EV

Developed in partnership with Subaru, and the twin near the related 2023 Subaru Solterra, the BZ4X announced the first of seven planned Toyota models with the compact crossover BZ or “Beyond Zero” convention. Available with standard or dual-motor all-wheel-drive models, including the single-motor front-wheel-drive version, the 2023 BZ4X follows Toyota’s traditionally conservative approach to new vehicle technology.

Instead of rewriting the book on what a clean-slate car could be, the BZ4X serves as an advancement of the excellent Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid, providing Toyota customers with a smooth bridge at full electric speed from gas power. But Toyota plans to sell only 7,000 of its first electrics in the first year of sales in the United States, limiting its rise to a growing number of electric compact crossovers.

At $ 43,215, including the $ 1,215 destination, it is priced competitively with single-motor competitors, but by the third quarter of this year, Toyota will reach the point of selling electric cars where the Fed will halve the $ 7,500 federal EV tax credit by half. For another six months before being completely phased out (pending law may reverse this). Limited availability and limited refunds have made it a problem for every automaker except Tesla and GM, whose credits have been phased out.

See here how it stacks up by price and number of competitors. A similar 2023 Subaru Solta price is expected in the next few weeks to For drive impressions and a full review, click on the links

The Ioniq 5 combines retro hatchback styling signals with futuristic lighting and wheels and nice packaging on the inside. It has been revisited on how to optimize interior space, and the state-of-the-art technology found in its 800-volt charging EV at 350-kW DC fast-charging is twice as expensive.

Powertrain: A 77.4-kwh battery pack and single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. A smaller 58-kwh battery variant has been planned, but has not yet been released.

Output and range: A 168-kilowatt single-motor weighs 225 hp and 258 pound-feet, and has a range of 303 miles and EPA efficiency of 114 MPGe; The AWD model has a 74-kw motor at the front and a 165-kw motor at the rear, producing 320 hp and 446 lb-ft, with a range of 256 miles and an EPA efficiency of 98 MPGe.

The Kia uses the same platform and mechanics as the Ioniq 5, but packages it in a sleek, sportier style that looks like an electric crossover, much like the fastback European Tourer. Unlike the Solterra and BZ4X, the EV6 and Ioniq 5 will never go wrong with each other. Unlike Hyundai, Kia sells the EV6 nationwide and now offers smaller battery packs and cheaper base models.

Powertrain: Comes with a small 58-kwh battery pack and rear-wheel drive lighter model; A larger 77.4-kwh model can have single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive.

Output and range: With an EPA efficiency of 232 miles range and 117 MPGe, the 58-kwh model and its 195-kw motor produce 167 hp and 258 lb-ft, which is the same torque from larger motors and battery packs; The 77.4-kwh pack and its motor produce 225 hp and 258 lb-ft, and have the same efficiency rating but range up to 310 miles; The larger pack and dual-motor AWD churns out 320 hp and 446 pound-feet, but leaves out performance efficiency, with an EPA rating of 105 MPGe and a range of 274 miles.

Price: The base light model costs 42,115, including a ফ 1,255 destination fee; A larger pack with a single motor in the wind trim costs 48,225, and adding another motor for AWD adds 3,900; On the top $ 52,455 GT-line, AWD adds $ 3,700. Kia Electrics still qualifies for a full $ 7,500 federal tax credit.

The Mustang Mach-E took the name of the iconic muscle car and was the first affordable electric crossover to face the Tesla Model Y. It mimicked the Tesla touchscreen layout, but did not match the technical sophistication. Yet the Mach-e builds a compelling, rear-drive bridge from one era of accessible sports cars to another, and has crossover versatility.

Powertrain: A 70-kwh standard range battery comes in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration; A 91-kwh extended range battery is also available.

Output and range: The single-motor version produces 266 or 290 hp, and the dual-motor models produce 346 hp on the standard line and 480 hp and 600 pound-feet on the AWD GT. Mach-E falls fast in any shape, 0-60 mph times at a speed of 6.1 seconds and a blazing 3.5 seconds. Select RWD has a range of 247 miles, GT has a range of 270 miles, and Route 1 with RWD has an extended range of 314 miles.

Price: Base Select model with rear-wheel drive and standard range 70-kwh battery costs $ 43,995, and adding a second motor for AWD adds 2,700; Buyers need to go for the 49,200 premium model to get the extended range battery; At the top of the lineup, the Mustang Mach-E GT is priced at $ 61,095, and the GT Performance Edition adds another $ 5,000. Each Mach-E is currently eligible for a $ 7,500 federal EV tax credit, and Ford is in the process of selling EVs, just like Toyota, so the phaseout could begin this year.

The VW ID.4 Mustang comes much later than the Mach-E and offers a conservative styled but wide alternative to the Model Y. The technology gets smaller, with a touchscreen layout and climate control that is unnecessarily complicated, but ID.4 is the least expensive electric crossover on our list, which goes a long way in our book, even if it lags behind range leaders.

Powertrain: Single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive is offered.

Output and range: AWD models get a boost of 201 hp and 229 lb-ft to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft torque of the rear-wheel-drive model, which reduces its 0-60 mph time from the seven-second range to the five-second range. The single-motor, rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro version of the 2021 ID.4 is rated 260 miles or 249 miles as the ID.4 AWD Pro. Advanced-equipped ID.4 Pro S versions are rated 250 miles, while ID.4 AWD Pro S is rated 240.

Price: $ 41,955 for the Base Pro model or $ 45,635 for the Pro AWD; Pro S models start at $ 46,455 with rear-wheel drive or $ 50,135 with AWD.

The electric compact crossover for the public has fulfilled its mission of being the first in the market, but Tesla has betrayed its promise of affordability by raising prices regularly, with at least a $ 10,000 jump in the last 18 months. Yet, despite some build quality issues, the brand’s bestseller in the United States has the most advanced, and most sophisticated technology in its class.

Powertrain: Both long range and performance models have dual-motor all-wheel drive, but Tesla does not disclose battery size or output.

Output and range: Performance model is estimated at 480 hp, 0-60 mph time 3.5 seconds and 303 miles. The long range model hits 0-60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds and has a range of 303 miles.

Price: Long range versions start at 64,990 (with 1,200 destination charge) and performance models start at 67,990.
